Information technology at Tuck
The Tuck School of Business supports a mixed academic-computing environment of Macintosh, IBM, and IBM-compatible personal computers, as well as UNIX workstations and central host systems used for research and instruction. Tuck currently participates in the ThinkPad University Program. Wired and wireless networks allow movement of data among these diverse environments while providing access to shared network resources and to online information resources such as Dow Jones Interactive; Lexis-Nexis; Thomson Financial Securities Data databases on new issues, mergers and acquisitions, and venture capital; Global Business Browser; Global Access; and Datastream.
Information technology services at Tuck are coordinated via TuckStreams, a web-based intranet service for current staff and students. Launched in 1997, TuckStreams is a role-based system that gives the Tuck community access to insitutional data, web applications, and educational tools on campus and around the world. The TuckStreams system is constantly being expanded and improved by an in-house development team.
Tuck offers a leading-edge information technology environment to students through public workstations, a comprehensive network infrastructure, and technology-enabled classrooms. Computing resources are available in many campus locations, including the Whittemore Wing for Information Technology, the Feldberg Business & Engineering Library, and the Bosworth Career Center. All information technology resources are connected to the campus network, which provides access to email, intranet and Internet services, public and personal file services, high-speed networked laser printers, and software, as well as library databases and online services. Mobile computing is supported throughout all areas of the Tuck campus by a proliferation of network jacks and a new wireless network that allows access from almost anywhere. Dartmouth College provides dial-in access to this comprehensive array of networked services from off-campus locations.
This robust educational technology infrastructure is vital to leveraging Tuck's unique strengths in management education; therefore, all incoming Tuck students are required to own a notebook computer. This permits the effective use of the comprehensive array of network-based services Tuck has optimized for a mobile computing environment.
Beginning with the Tuck School class of 2008 all students will be
provided with a standard notebook computer to use while enrolled in the
MBA program. The cost of the computer will be included in the tuition and
fees for the program.
The administrative information technology needs of the Tuck School are met through a variety of central and personal computing systems, including spreadsheet and database management systems for Macintosh and IBM personal computers. Tuck supplements its use of Dartmouth's institutional data systems with TuckStreams web applications and personal computing tools.
