At Tuck: Healthcare Initiative, TuckStuff, Admitted Students Weekend

When I was looking for a business school I knew I was interested in going into healthcare and biotech. I looked at other schools with healthcare tracks, but I made the decision to come to Tuck and be part of something growing. I've never looked back.

My summer internship at Genentech was an unbelievable experience. I helped market a cancer drug with tremendous life-saving potential. Working with Tuck alumni and being a valued team member highlighted how well Tuck prepared me for the complex world of healthcare.

The director of the Healthcare Initiative is also on the faculty of the Dartmouth Medical School. Working with the Initiative is an excellent way for students to interface with the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and the Center for the Evaluative Clinical Sciences. Students have the opportunity to work on consulting projects at the medical center and to meet with industry leaders in all areas of healthcare—from biotech to service delivery. I learned a lot by being part of this growing area of Tuck and from the students pursuing their MD/MBA degrees.

As a member of the Healthcare Club I saw firsthand how Tuck's Career Development Office, faculty, and alumni support students in reaching their career goals. At our brown-bag lunches we had speakers who addressed all areas of the industry. Of course, we prepped each other for interviews and shared information on internships. We also organized company visits to pharma/biotech/medical device companies in Boston, the New York/ New Jersey region, and the San Francisco Bay Area. Company visits are a great way for students to get in front of top companies. The club's goal is to educate students about the industry and the professional opportunities that exist. When I was at Tuck, Robert Essner, CEO of Wyeth, visited the school. Through the Alan Smith T'53 Visiting Executives Program, I was the student host for Mr. Essner during his visit, and had the chance to talk with him one-on-one.

The healthcare recruiting presence on campus is impressive. Every year big healthcare firms recruit at Tuck, and we have alumni working in all areas of the healthcare industry. It's true what they say about Tuck alums—they are there for you. And the Career Development Office, Healthcare Club, and Healthcare Initiative help students tap into that network.

Getting the emerging technologies out to the hospitals, doctors, and patients who need it is incredibly satisfying. Because of Tuck, my work and my efforts make an impact every day.
