Before Tuck, I worked with four Tuck alums at a venture capital firm in an industry where people are notoriously frugal with their time. The fact that somebody could cold call and just say "I'm a Tuck '90" or "Tuck '80" and get through definitely impressed me. As a first-year MBA student, I essentially cold-called managing partners of large private equity firms. But when I told their assistants I was from Tuck, they said, "When's a good time for him to call you?"

Leaving business school with a close network of people you can draw on throughout your career is just as important as learning how to read a balance sheet.

Being a host fellow at the Center for Private Equity and Entrepreneurship gave me amazing access to visiting execs. I was their connection to Tuck for the days they were here: I met them when they arrived, I made sure they got to their class, I organized their office hours, I went to lunch and dinner with them and other students. It was an unbelievable opportunity to spend concentrated one-on-one time with senior people in the industry, to get their insights and make connections.
