HANOVER, N.H. - When asked to rank factors in evaluating an investment opportunity, angel investors and venture capitalists consistently rank people as the most important key to success. Greener Ventures 2005, Dartmouth's annual entrepreneurship conference, will demonstrate that entrepreneurial skills can be taught, learned, and cultivated. The conference will take place on October 15 at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, and will attract entrepreneurs from across the country.

Aimed at encouraging entrepreneurial activity among members of the Dartmouth community, Greener Ventures is open to students, faculty, researchers, alumni, and staff from the Tuck School of Business, other Dartmouth College graduate schools, the Dartmouth undergraduate program, and the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. The conference will also include workshops and networking events.

Panel discussions will cover a range of topics, including how to bring a business plan to life in the corporate form, common questions and misconceptions about patents, and the unique challenges women face as entrepreneurs.

This year a new type of business competition—E-ship Improv!—is on the conference agenda. E-ship Improv! will mix the concept of executing a business idea with the quick thinking needed for pitching to potential investors. Three teams of students from the Tuck School will work with alumni player-coaches to hone their delivery of the same business idea. They'll develop the concept, practice the business pitch, and make a presentation to the conference audience. The audience will select the winner.

Alumni coaches of the Tuck teams include John Bello T'74, founder and former CEO, SoBe Beverages; Blair LaCorte T'90, venture partner, BayCity Capital; and Gordie Nye D'76, T'81, general partner, Prism Venture Partners.

Greener Ventures is hosted by the Center for Private Equity and Entrepreneurship at the Tuck School of Business, the Dartmouth Entrepreneurial Network, the Thayer School of Engineering, The Portman Fund/Rockefeller Center, Dartmouth Medical School, and the Norris Cotton Cancer Center at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Sponsors include Borealis Ventures, Advanced Technology Ventures, Prism Ventures, Pierce Atwood LLP, Cesari and McKenna LLP, McDermott Will & Emery, Merritt & Merritt & Moulton, and Michael Gonnerman, Inc..
